All of the animal references are a nice thread throughout the book, but my favorite parts of the poems are when they shift into narration. In “Landscape with Burning Bridges,” the narrator watches familial chaos ensue in the form of an enraged father and a scared mother. Her reaction is to think about the shape of a crucifix she holds in her palm. Another poem, “After the Accident,” does something similar. It’s about the moments after a car accident–hanging upside down in the car, blood beginning to gush, people screaming outside the car. In both of these pieces, the narrator seems almost too stunned to really move or do anything. It’s very cool.
