What about romance?

Posted by Rachel Wagner on

Flipping through The Kiss Quotient today, I remembered how much I love romance stories. They are so comfortable because you know what's going to happen--there will be two people who are an unlikely match but by the end it all makes sense. There's something certain and secure about that model. And maybe that's why when you look at real life, you want it to be real like that too. The true test to know if something is a romance, though, is to see that it ends in marriage. So the difference between romance and tragedy is that either people get married or everyone dies. In that...

Children's books & En espanol & manga

Posted by Rachel Wagner on

I recently added some new genres to the site--children's books, libros en español, and manga. The children's stuff is because I actually do know a few good books for them given the fact that I've read about one million to my son. I know which ones are actually good and worthwhile. I'll be adding more of those as time goes on. Right now it's like Wild Kratts and Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus--smart stuff or funny stuff. Libros en español es porque volví a aprender español hace unos meses. Dos de los libros aquí son los que estaba leyendo durante las...

S/o Haiti

People in Haiti are protesting a president who has refused to step down at the end of his term. In solidarity with them, I put all the books I have written by Haitian writers on sale. I encourage people to read more Haitian books and to care more about their situation. This is a topic that came up in my classes this past week, talking about the purpose of reading narrative. I made sure to point out that everyone's story has to do with us, the reader. These aren't just differing experiences. It's about seeing yourself in them and them in you. Because what happened...

Blogs & Books & Half Off

The three books I have out right now were all mostly written around the same time. I was keeping a blog on my personal site a little while back. I think I was just sick of the publishing world and trying to get my stuff out the new-traditional way via online magazines and twitter. I don't remember my exact intention, but I think I started with the men I was meeting. Then I also added a few posts about fashion or just life. Actually one of them got picked up by a magazine lol. That editor found the piece on her...

50% off All Fiction Titles Cuz I Like Fiction

Posted by Rachel Wagner on

I used to love fiction best. I wanted to write it and read it almost exclusively. That's what I was studying in college too. Well, mostly you'd read a work of fiction, then you'd read a bunch of non-fiction about that fictional piece. Then you'd write your own non-fiction piece on all of those texts. It was fun. I got more into non-fiction after graduation, tho. I don't know what switched things over really, but I started to prefer reading real stories. Essays, memoirs, whatever. I liked to know what really went on and how that one person is responding...
