I liked following someone’s sex life like this. Want Me strikes me as a very American version of The Sexual Life of Catherine Millet.
Anyway I can relate to her general feeling of wanting to be wanted by men, while also being exhausted by it. Just being out in the world as a woman requires a lot of intellectual work. Dealing with internet interactions and sex injuries and breast feeding. Tracy Clark-Flory is just a few years older than me so I definitely get her culturally.
The book itself is an act of reflection. It’s documented right into the prose. She adds sources from bell hooks and Judith Butler to moments in her life, although at the time she hadn’t read those texts yet. She returns to essays she wrote about hooking up. She can look back at being dry humped onstage and know “I didn’t like that” (p 274).
Ultimately Want Me shows how she got to who she is now, now knowing that being wanted means everything and nothing.
