This is a really great novel. I think the cover (which was done by her sister) is mesmerizing and that matches the plot. Suzy is a 30 year old Korean court translator. It puts her in an awkward position of representing people’s customs and integrity while also doing rote comprehension and restatement in English. Not everything translates and that is the point–that discomfort in trying to (re)present something that just is.
Suzy is also very much on a personal mission in The Interpreter. She wants to know more about her parent’s shooting from five years ago, even though by then she was disowned for leaving college to run off with an older married guy, a white guy no less. So that’s all hovering over her as she runs here and there trying to put the mystery together. Searching for her missing sister, visiting a guy who she translated for in court, getting cryptic phone calls from a new older boyfriend.
I just didn’t want to stop reading ever. Suki Kim’s representation of Queens and the surrounding area was a cool world to live in for a few days.
