Best time to read is the morning. Afternoon is fine. Night time is hard because your eyes are getting tired. But in the morning you are truly alert. Waking up and reading it like setting your mind for the day. It's like a mini therapy session with yourself. Focusing on something else. Following the plot. Reading the lines. Getting lost in the language.
I always read for like a half hour or an hour in the morning. I just have to. I wish I could read longer than that (and sometimes I do), but eventually I know that I have other stuff to do. Grading or teaching or homeschooling or writing. Eventually the rest of the day has to start. But reading in the morning gives me a sense of self. I am alive and actively seeking more life.
Even when I wake up with a migraine, I read in the morning. In that case, I just pick an easy book. Like a hood book or a graphic novel. Nothing too strenuous. Just something to get my brain going. It's the surest way to set the tone for the day. Like even if you don't have another free minute to read or do what you want, at least you had that time to yourself with a book.
