People in Haiti are protesting a president who has refused to step down at the end of his term. In solidarity with them, I put all the books I have written by Haitian writers on sale. I encourage people to read more Haitian books and to care more about their situation. This is a topic that came up in my classes this past week, talking about the purpose of reading narrative. I made sure to point out that everyone's story has to do with us, the reader. These aren't just differing experiences. It's about seeing yourself in them and them in you. Because what happened to, say, Frederick Douglass or Anne Frank has a lot to do with me. How they felt, what was going on around them. That's what reading does--it makes you realize you're not alone. And neither are they.
